The Friends of Old Wymering (FOW) came into existence in 2006 as a result of a grassroots campaign to save Wymering Manor from the threat of demolition.
We have two objectives:
- To promote interest in Old Wymering
- To promote, encourage and support the restoration of Wymering Manor house and any other historic and interesting buildings in Old Wymering as resources for history and social education, community purposes and for public access where and when this may be obtained
We do not hold regular meetings but members are kept informed through the website and a Newsletter at least once a year. We are researching the history of the area and encourage contact with information about Old Wymering so we can make it available on our website.
FOW continues to promote interest in Wymering Manor and the Old Wymering Conservation Area of Portsmouth. We believe this work will help stimulate action to preserve the best of Old Wymering and improve the lives of local people.
History Group
Many of our members are interested in the history of Wymering and its surrounding area. Friends of Old Wymering History Group would like to contribute to this by:
- Researching and recording the past of Wymering and its environs
- Making available the records and results of our research
- Sharing information with the Education Group of FOW
There is a lot we don't know about the history of the area called Old Wymering. Local history enthusiasts and people tracing their family history in the area can make an important contribution in this area of study. If you have information about Wymering's past, the people, the buildings or places, please share it with us. There is a lot of information held by individuals which, if brought together and organised, could make a real difference to what we can tell the world about Old Wymering.
Education Group
The FOW Education Group aims to keep alive at the grass roots level the history of Old Wymering and of Wymering Manor, in particular. We would like especially to open young people's eyes to their surroundings by promoting local history in an imaginative way.
After busy years with nearly 600 visitors, both adults and children, visiting Wymering Manor through the Education Group, activities were curtailed in 2009 when access to the Manor became difficult to arrange. Until the future of the Manor is clearer the Education Group has no further visits planned.
FOW Newsletter
This is an occasional publication with information about FOW events and activities. It is available free of charge to FOW members.
The future?
FOW continue to be committed to the work of the Education and History Groups and their objectives. We will be developing new materials and investigating outreach opportunuities to promote interest in the local area as well as Wymering Manor house.
